Yes you read that title correctly. Sugar is somewhere between 7-9x more addictive than heroin. Our liver stores 90 grams of glucose and 300-400 grams in the muscles. Any excess then gets stored as body fat. We only require 30-40 grams a day in our diets. Anything that has unnatural sugar, for example juices, cake, cookies, treats, soda will put it over that recommended daily intake. Yes just one cookie, just one candybar will put you over that level. Our bodies were never meant to handle the gobbs of sugar they are forced to digest in the 21st century. Around the turn of the 20th century Americans consumed around 40 pounds of sugar a year. As of 2014 we have amped that up to 150-170 pounds a year. Cray cray! It's a never ending cycle, add sugar to the consumer's food and you have them hooked coming back for more and more because we can't break the addiction. In this day and age everything has corn or wheat in it. High on the glycemic index is corn, popcorn, wheat, potatoes, mangoes, bananas, grapes, pineapple, etc. We spike our blood glucose level in our blood for awhile then when it drops we feel miserable with nausea, headache, irritability, fatigue. To counteract it we consume more sugar to get rid of that feeling. It's a viscious cycle.
If you aren't getting enough sleep at night then there is a greater subjection to this addiction. When our bodies are tired they crave quick bursts of energy found in concentrated sweet carbohydrates. It raises the levels of serotonin in our brains. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter known to cause depression if there isn't enough chemical. It's a chemical that makes us feel happy. When we crash it can cause depression.
My suggestion is to try foods with low calorie sweeteners, but avoid diet products replaced aspartame. Aspartame has a strong association with cancer.
